Emerging New Media Production at New England Tech
The Associate in Science degree program in Graphics, Multimedia, and Web Design (GMW) Technology at New England Tech prepares students for entry-level positions in a variety of emerging “new media” desktop production environments. The underlying goal of front-end visual creativity is central to all of the technological coursework in the GMW program. Each student conceptualizes and designs their own personal “brand” which is used to package and promote their individual portfolios. For many students, they may be storytelling, web designing, and publishing for the very first time.
Now, in 2013, there is a whole new set of changes to consider with “integrated media” including the immense popularity of mobile delivery on portable tablets and smartphones. Portable devices have changed the way people view content.
Rick Mitchell, Associate Professor and Department Chair for Graphics, Multimedia, and Web Design Technology at NEIT stated, “Today, anyone wishing to distribute their message across media must also consider all of the various types of devices that can be used to view their message. Because of these portable device options, designers must be aware of the complex specifications and resources required to build for mobile delivery. Designers need to understand both the possibilities and restrictions of each platform.”
Starting with the core skills of digital photography, user interface (UI) design, and computer graphics, New England Tech students receive extensive hands-on instruction in web design, web content management systems, interactive multimedia, branding, e-publishing, packaging design, and social media marketing. A variety of 2D and 3D animation software, along with video for web delivery is also included.
Responsive Design
Emerging opportunities with ePublishing, social media, CMS/WordPress, and the necessity for mobile delivery cause NEIT faculty to consistently revamp GMW course content. A typical design scenario today often requires that a concept be produced for traditional web or offset print delivery, but also be compatible for tablets like Kindle and iPad as well as smartphones. YouTube video inclusion is often a must, and the savvy customer is also now fully expecting to participate with integrated branded messages on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media. The age of on-screen visual gimmicks has passed. “Content is king,” so structuring design around rich, direct, value added content, is critical. Web and mobile design must be focused on creating a desired user experience (UX).
For years, Adobe Flash was the staple application for creating and delivering animation and video streaming. Now, new resources like HTML5, jQuery, and CSS3 have evolved to accommodate the needs for mobile bandwidth and responsive design on portable devices. Designing for quick legibility and fast usability is critical.
Our new main campus in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, showcases a stunning Graphics, Multimedia, and Web Design suite designed by GMW faculty. Circular, glass-walled Mac computer labs create a dynamic and inspirational environment for visual presentation and collaborative learning. An open lab policy staffed by peer tutors ensures unlimited access to the full Adobe Creative Suite, cameras, and studio.
Lifelong Learning
“With smartphones and tablets fast becoming everyone’s default personal computer, we are not dealing with our grandfather’s multimedia anymore”, stated Mitchell. The Graphics, Multimedia, and Web Design Technology at NEIT requires that each graduate leave the program with a personalized branded portfolio of their own design that implements responsive design to create desired UI/UX results. Furthermore, the program instills a love of learning to prepare today’s designers to be flexible and adaptable to future change.
